OVERVIEW
Pros
- Most versatile character in the game
- Great damage dealer with a lot of untechable setups
- Shikamaru is the only character that can steal items
Cons
- Has no real guard breaking moves
In the previous version of the game, Narutimate Accel or Ultimate Ninja 4, TS Shikamaru was a character banned from competitive tournaments along with his friend, Hiruko Sasori. Indeed, after that famous Shishi-Rendan tournament known as the Shikamania tournament where people only picked him to abuse his overpowered abilities and tricks, the Shishi-Rendan community decided to ban him from tournament play.
In Narutimate Accel 2, TS Shikamaru came back with a few tweaks and adjustments in his gameplay that made him able to join the competitive scene once again. However, despite those few arrangements from CyberConnect2, TS Shikamaru is still a force to be reckoned with. In the competitive scene's point of view, TS Shikamaru is considered as a top tier character and one of the best characters in the game (if we ignore banned characters). He shares his top tier rank with TS Temari, TS Naruto and PTS Lee, but one thing for sure; he is up there with them. With so many tricks and tools at his disposition, he has the ability to be the most versatile character in the game and give every character a hard time against him. From a rush down king to a very defensive play style, TS Shikamaru can play any role and in the following paragraphs, I will explain how to play each of his styles properly.
RUSHDOG TACTIC
The ‘rushdog’ play style is a combination of the Rushdown play style and the bulldog play style and it is the most used play style in competitive play with TS Shikamaru because of it's usefulness at finishing the match quickly. This play style consist of pressuring your opponent with TS Shikamaru's pressure move,
, and cancelling the second part of the move with shurikens until you are in a good position to start your bread & butter offense. Once in a good position, this is where the big damage comes in. TS Shikamaru's neutral
poke is one of the best combo starters in the game as it is fast and has a lot of priority. If it hits correctly, follow it up with the bread & butter untechable jutsu setup for an easy 25%:
~ ![]()
. Important to note that the jutsu must be the Chouji assist cut scene jutsu. After the jutsu activation, your opponent will be on the ground next to you open to any OTG damage. TS Shikamaru has no real guard break and OTG move however,
chain and his parachute kunai trap jutsu can deal a lot of OTG damage if you have time to land it. The Chouji assist cut scene jutsu fallstun gives enough time to TS Shikamaru to do both of them for a solid 7 to 13%. That’s 35% total damage every time and since it’s untechable and only 4 hits, it’s pretty hard to knj. Other pressuring tools such as his hawk and counter helps him set up his bread & butter, but his
is really the primary tool to use.
DEFENSIVE-PUNISHER TACTIC
This play style is where all of TS Shikamaru's other tools comes in handy. Shikamaru's tag trap,
, Counter,
, and Kunai lockdown
, are the primary tools to use when playing this style. This type of play basically consists of keeping your ground, plat conservatively and punish any bad decisions made by your opponent. The floor tag is an efficient tool to control your opponent's movement and the screen as if they mistakenly step on it and don't air tech, they will be sent flying in the air and be open to any attacks you throw out. Staying near the floor tag and keeping your foe at bay with TS Shikamaru's
is the main gameplan with this type of play. Because it is so hard to dodge the kunai and the huge damage boost they received, your opponent will be forced to come to you and stop from spamming it. To do so, they will need to X-Dash at the right time to go through the shuriken which may be very hard because of the floor tag,
counter and the option-select block. If the opponent mistimed his X-Dash to get in and land on either of these three traps, it leaves them in a punish situation where you can do whatever you want with them. The Chouji assist bread & butter or ougi can be also be used in this play style to punish.
chain or the kunai parachute jutsu are also used sparingly when the opponent is very far and you want to chip them from afar. The Defensive-Punisher play style can be very frustrating for your opponent as it is very hard to find good counter for it.
STRATEGY TACTIC
The strategy play style focuses on getting in awakening state and setting up ougis for big damage. TS Shikamaru, along with TS Temari, possess one of the fastest provoke type awakening in the game as it only requires one second to activate, and getting it constantly in a match will be part of the strategy. Setups for awakening are not really necessary as the activation is so fast, you can just taunt whenever you get the opportunity. Though, most players tend to use it after a bread & butter Chouji cut scene jutsu or when the opponent land on the floor tag so the activation is guaranteed. Strategy mode gives TS Shikamaru a lot of advantages aside from the regular stat boost. Indeed, it gives him new moves to work with, a new ougi animation and with that, he gains the ability to passion combo. Landing the passion combo (
~
) once awakened will be part of the main ougi setups because it's big damage, safe and an easy way to land it. Other tools such as the floor tag and, if you're playing another bulldog/rushdown character, the
counter might help you set up the ougi. After the ougi, you can easily get back to awakened state again, charge chakra and repeat the process.
TS Shikamaru is a character that has a whole lot of different tools, but none of them are useless. This is mainly why he can be played as everything and why he is classed as one of the best characters in the game.
Tips/Tricks & Extra Notes
INFINITE
It is a little hard to do but it does work.
~
u can throw shrukens before or after the second hit. It might be a litter easier to throw the shrukens just before the second hit. This can also be done in genius mode and since Shikamaru is faster it is easier to do BUT since genius mode wears off after 20 seconds it's not a complete infinite.
AIRBORNE LOCK
Shikamaru's
can hold airbourne opponents in place or force them to make mistakes such as x-dashing to you. That could give you the chance to use the Chouji team jutsu.
FACEBOOK
(The name face book came from Shikamaru's NA3 tag but in NA2 he has a good facebook in the corner as well.)
If Shikamaru places his
tag in front of his opponent while they are in the corner.(tag has to be a few spaces in front of them) Shikamaru can do his
or his A.
and it will slam the opponent on to the tag. If you placed the tag in the right spot your opponent will reset stand and the tag will still be there. BUT there is still a wrong spot. If the tag is too close it will disappear after the second slam. If its in the "sweet spot" the tag will remain for the normal 8 seconds.
QUICK OUGI SETUP
Shikamaru can catch ougi off of his tag. The opponent can step on the tag and it will send them flying up and you can ougi them on the way down. However, if you place the tag down on the stage and hit them with your ougi animation while they block, if you manage to push them on the floor tag, it will take their guard down and the ougi will connect.
PASSION COMBO
When awakened, the speed boost and new ougi animation TS Shikamaru gains makes him able to passion.
Specific Matchups
Against...
Chakra Denial - TS Shikamaru shouldn't have any problem against chakra denial characters. His damage output is far greater than them and he can stop up close pressure with his
counter. The floor tag is also another tool to help him keeping them out and control the flow of the game. The
counter jutsu is viable in this matchup if the player wants to punish his opponent hard for being predictable, but since TS Shikamaru has other options against them, most people uses the Chouji's assist cut scene jutsu to punish them for 35% damage and make them afraid of doing something not safe. Even though you can keep them out pretty easily, I wouldn't recommend any ougi setups. Your damage output is already enough to punish them hard. Strategy mode is also viable but like I mentioned, ougi setups aren't necessary as your status boost is enough. It is also a good way to make them afraid and run away. If you are lacking chakra because of too many counter/Chouji jutsus, you can go into mode, make them afraid of you and take that time to freely charge your chakra back.
Bulldogging - This match can be pretty even depending on who you are fighting. If you're fighting characters such as TS Naruto, Kakashi and PTS Lee, the match can go either way because, like TS Shikamaru, they're damage output and offense are really good. Lower tiers bulldoggers, however, shouldn't be a threat for TS Shikamaru. You can either play this match offensively and fight fire with fire or apply the defensive-punisher play-style. You have most of what other bulldoggers have plus more, so the match will either be even or in your favor, again, depending on who you are fighting.
Ranged Attackers - Ranged attackers wants to keep you out and fight you from afar. Punish them for doing so for to long by freely activating Strategy mode. When awakened, getting in shouldn't be too much of a problem with so many status boost, so rush them down. In Genius mode, you also get more shurikens, so during shuriken wars you will be able to rival/beat them in numbers. Ougi setups are not necessary, but they are still viable. You can also play their game and play as a ranged attacker/keep-away character with
,
chain,
jutsu and the awakening's shuriken boost. Although, it is not the best way to play the match-up and puppet users completely nullifies that strategy, it is still considerable in some cases.
Rushdown - Along with TS Temari and PTS Lee, TS Shikamaru is one of the best rushdown character in the game. So like in the bulldogging matchup, the match will either go in your favor or it will be even. Rushdown characters that might give TS Shikamaru problem are TS Temari, PTS Lee, PTS Neji and maybe TS Hinata. I'd play that match offensively and would only rely on Chouji jutsu and his awakening's stat boost for more damage.
