Ultimate Ninja Storm
From Narutimate Wiki
One of the new features introduced to the series in Ultimate Ninja Storm is "Awakening Mode", a transformation that can be activated when a player loses a certain amount of health during a match. The health requirement for each character differs based on how powerful the transformation is. Once activated, the character gains new abilities, speed, and stronger attacks. A few of the characters in the game gain entirely new movesets after transforming. With the d-pad, players can use preset items during a match that either damage the opponent or provide various status effects like increasing attack power, or lowering the opponent's defense. Players are also able to customize their character's jutsu and select two support characters to use in a match. Returning to the game from previous installments is "jutsu clash" mode, which is initiated if both players activate their special attack at the same time. During this mode, both players have to press the corresponding button as fast as possible in order to knock away their opponent.
The game includes 25 playable characters, each of which can also be used as a support character during battle. Ten additional support-only characters are available as free downloadable content released over the five month period that followed the game's release. Additional downloadable content include alternative costumes, and new missions.
The story mode loosely covers the events of the anime up to episode 135. Notations & Abbreviations
Here is a list of common abbreviations used in discussions for Ultimate Ninja Storm. Expect this list to grow over time.
- UNS or NUNS - Abbreviation for Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm
- KnJ- Kawarimi no Jutsu, or Replacement
- Tech –Recovering from a launcher or wall/floor bounce
- SHC – Shuriken Cancel

Assists
In UNS, the player is able to pick any 2 assists at the character select screen. The first and second assists are mapped to the L1 & R1 buttons respectively. If two different support characters were chosen, they will have seperate meters that dictate the amount of time the assist must recharge after being used. If the player picked two assists from the same character, the meter will regenerate faster. All assist moves can be broken into two catagories: Combo assists, and Jutsu assists. Every support character has at least 1 of each.
Combo Assists
Most combo assists are rather generic. While a few are character specific (The Third Hokage's "Ghostly Tactics") most are canned animations. The common ones include "the launcher" (Rock Lee, Tenten), "the Turn-Around" (Neji, Sasuke), and the knockdown/slam (Itachi, Asuma). While they're not identical, it's important to remember that multiple characters may share the same assist when putting together a team.
This especially comes into play because when you pick a single support character, using a combo assist will only use half of the meter. This means that the assist is available more often than if you had picked 2 characters. For example "The Turn-Around" assist is a popular assist, because it allows just about every character to combo into their ougi very easily. Now, a character like Kisame for example, may want to have that assist available as often as possible, so a player using Kisame may decide to choose Neji's turn around as his first assist, and Sasuke's Swallow Turn as his second. While this allows him constant access to the assist, it also makes his game very 1 dimensional, since both of his assists do the same thing.
Now, what he may want to due instead is pick Sasuke's Swallow Turn as his first assist, and Sasuke's Phoenix Flower Jutsu as his second assist. Now, because Sasuke is his solo support character, the swallow turn assist will regenerate twice as fast. This gives him frequent access to the Turn Around assist, but also gives him the Phoenix Flower Assist which is a very strong ranged assist.
Combo assists are typically important because they can keep the opponent in a hitstun for an extended amount of time and allow the point character oppurtunities to captilize with their own attacks.
Jutsu Assists
This is where assists vary much more strongly. Jutsu assists are essentially just a character's jutsus in support form. It's important to be aware that not all jutsus function the same when used in support. Most obviously the chidori/rasengan type assists, which dont create a cutscene or do nearly as much damage. Strong jutsu assists can be the foundation of an entire team, especially since they can create dynamic setups that combo assists cannot. It's important to make sure that your jutsu assists blend well with the point character and provide a specific function, otherwise you'll be wasting a slot on something that may not help your team.
